The real costs of free publication

Some questions you should ask anyone offering to publish your book for you:

Is the cost of the design work included?
Do you have to prepare the files and is it expensive if you get it wrong?
Do you have to order a minimum number of copies?
What are the penalties if your files don't upload first time?
Does the publishing site/company carry out the legal deposit of copies required for any book registered with an ISDN number? Probably not! This is not only a legal requirement for all published books, but it means your book is safely preserved for posterity in the British Library and is listed in their database. Although presently still only accepting printed paper books, they are planning to store all ebooks, and all documents created digitally - and we include all the information for this as well.

What price will you pay for copies of your printed book? Setup costs are often clawed back by charging a higher than normal price for each book, and you could end up selling your book at cost to you, just to get your money back.

Rather than being one of hundreds, perhaps thousands of authors the company is dealing with, by self publishing you can concentrate on all aspects of selling your book, knowing that 100% of the price comes to you. And with print on demand, you can find a friendly printer and come to an arrangement for short runs of your book as orders dictate if you do decide to print on 'hard copy'.
