The electronic book was a focus of attention at BookExpo America, the publishing and book-selling industry’s annual trade show last week.

Much of the buzz was created by Kindle, Amazon’s electronic reader, which now accounts for 6% of the company's overall book sales, according to CEO Jeff Bezos.

E-books are no longer a fad. Nearly all publishers say their sales of e-books are growing exponentially. For example, Simon & Schuster said its sales of e-books will more than double this year, after growing 40% in 2007. It says it will convert an additional 5,000 titles to electronic format this year, making available many books on its backlist of consistent sellers. MORE

Amazon says it does not expect e-books to replace bound paper versions just yet. In fact, Kindle users are buying more physical books, not simply switching to e-books. Amazon says that, after buying a Kindle, customers purchase just as many physical books and 2.5 times as many books overall, or 3 e-books for every 2 physical copies. Some publishing executives dispute that claim, saying that there is almost a 1-to-1 cannibalization of physical books.

Despite their complaints, e-readers are paradoxically being used within the publishing industry itself. Many publishers equip their sales force with e-book readers, so that they don't have to lug around preview editions. And editors at many large publishing houses use the device to read manuscripts sent in by literary agents...

Doing a revamp of my ebook pages, but still have to review all the free ebooks I have and put links to them here. Have found some useful tools for sussing out your sites. This one http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/ gives you a free tool to check out key search terms in your area. You type in a common term for your site, for this one it's obviously ebooks, and it lists up to 50 associated keywords in order of popularity, and with their incidence in the search engines. A very useful too indeed. Another is http://seodigger.com/ [courtesy of Jayde search engine] a quite useful tool which tells you what search terms your site is ranked with google for. Just put in the url and it comes up with a list of search terms and your ranking for them. Highly recommended.

Qassia continues to grow with thousands of pieces of content added every week. It is awash with marketers of course, isn't everywhere these days, all obsessing about becoming rich, and full of statistics about 'driving website visitors to your site' which sound a bit like cattle ranching. The poor dumb beasts are then expected to graze on the goodies these people lay out for them, making them rich in the process.

Still no time to review all the free ebooks I got recently. Some were sales with retail rights, but I'll probably just give them away. If I started charging for more ebooks, it would diminish the ones I do charge for, bury them in a pile of 'not really worth the money' stuff, so I prefer to just keep a few to sell and give everything else away. It's how the net started and continues to this day despite the invasion of get rich quick marketers who have now discovered blogging, so drone on endlessly about marketing, SEO, getting more traffic and other obsessive stuff. Not for me. People either want to buy what I have or they don't. I really can't waste my life thinking about it, and agonising about getting rich and sitting by the pool with my laptop and a drink with my flash car in the drive ... well that seems to be what most of these people are utterly obsessed with.

Another book almost completed, this one a book of New Poetry which has some scalp tingling poems and which has been a pleasure to work on for that reason. It's going to be printed and will be for sale later this year, and hopefully for download as an ebook as well. It also, unusually for books of poetry, has illustrations, which do add a bit of visual interest which compliments the poetry.

This site contains my thoughts on publishing, particularly ebooks, and the many skills which go into publishing; copy editing, proofreading, typesetting, layout, graphic design etc. There's also a growing list of ebooks for instant download. You can grab any free ones as soon as you wish, just click on the title in the list on the left and it will start the download. They are all checked and guaranteed clear of all forms of malware, spyware, adware or viruses.

I also have some ebooks for sale, both mine and a couple I've produced for other people, click on the link to go to their separate pages where you can read about the book and hopefully decide to buy it. Paypal payment is quick and easy.

My books are about self empowering, principally how to DIT publish yourself. This goes from your early manuscript right up to selling your ebook on your own website. Do It Yourself, a good philosphy for life.

I have more than a hundred new free titles to load up and put links to, so far I haven't had the time, but I shall really soon have a massive expansion of the free list. Watch this space. There's some interesting stuff, but I have to review them all before offering them to my visitors, and some will doubtless end up in the bin where they belong; there's an awful lot of rubbish being touted about in ebook format.
